Skibo's Special Relationship

Though the term had been in use since the nineteenth century, it was Winston Churchill who popularised the concept of the 'special relationship' between Britain and the US. Though separated by an ocean (and – infamously – a common language) the two nations have long been trading partners, allies and friends. Situated in the picturesque Scottish Highlands, Skibo also has its own 'special relationship' with America – one that dates back over a century.

Mountains, Floods, and Darwinian Scottish Wilds

To Scottish painter John MacWhirter (1835-1911), Scotland was the perennial "land of the mountain and the flood." Or, at least, such was the title of this oil painting exhibited by the artist in the Royal Academy exhibition of 1875. The name is borrowed from 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel', an 1805 narrative poem by Sir Walter Scott. Today, it hangs in Skibo Castle's third-floor stairwell.

Skibo's Historic Stonework

While Skibo Castle can trace its foundations back to the 13th century, most of its structure dates from around 1899 when Andrew Carnegie undertook extensive remodelling of his newly purchased Highland home. Overseen by Inverness architects Ross & Macbeth, the enormous project tripled the size of the building, transforming it into a stunning example of Scottish Baronial design.
